PAM & TOMMY | Review

The 8-episode Hulu-produced miniseries debuted on February 2, highlighting the complex and passionate love story between Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee, two controversial and discussed 90s Hollywood characters.

“Pam & Tommy” is the new series starring Sebastian Stan and Lily James, flanked by Seth Rogen and Nick Offerman. The series deals with the real events before and after the diffusion of the sex tape made by the couple during their honeymoon in 1995, which was subsequently stolen and spread without the consent of the two stars. Despite the initial premises of the series theme, “Pam & Tommy” manages to perfectly highlight the story of the couple full of passion, sweetness, conflict and pain, words that perfectly describe the relationship between Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee.

The series, set in the mid-90s between music, setting and costumes, focuses on two points of view, Pamela and Tommy’s one and Rand Gauthier’s, a character whose desire for revenge started the story which then evolves into a vast plot full of many points of reflection. The complete transformation of Lily James and Sebastian Stan in the role of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee is one of the many strengths of the series followed immediately after by the masterful skill of the two actors in fully immersing themselves in the two characters, in their movements and expressions. The actor has in fact stated that “ he always tries to immerse himself in the part of each character. He plays, leaving, however, the possibility of giving his own tone to the character!”

Lily James with her work has managed to give voice to the story of a woman and make Pamela Anderson the true protagonist of the most touching and delicate scenes of the series and thus making the viewer reflect on the distinction between person and public character but above all, try to make people understand what it means to be a woman protagonist of this “scandal” and the consequences that this entails.

Sebastian Stan, on the other hand, has confirmed several times during his career his ability to be able to interpret twisted characters with hidden fragility and could only be the perfect choice to interpret Tommy Lee (drummer of Mötley Crüe, a heavy metal band formed in the 80s). The actor highlights the various facets of the character from the darker side to the most intimate and sweet moments in which Tommy Lee is the affectionate, caring husband and not the character built for the audience. The first three episodes of the miniseries released on February 2 were directed by Craig Gillespie, who had previously worked with Sebastian Stan on “I, Tonya” and we can see the very similar directing style between the two products, which best analyze controversial female characters.

Craig Gillespie tried to make the audience fall in love with Pam and Tommy and has managed to set the tone for their characters.

Pam & Tommy is definitely confirming the high expectations for having been one of the most anticipated series of the year.
