Hours after lifting the FIFA World Cup trophy in Qatar’s Lusail Stadium, Argentina’s Lionel Messi took to Instagram to post a heartfelt message for his fans.
Messi shared some unforgettable moments from the final and quashed speculation over his retirement by revealing his intention to continue playing for the national team.
His post has since gone viral and is expected to become the “most liked” post on Instagram.
“CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD!!!!!!! So many times I dreamed it, so much I wanted it that I still don’t fall, I can’t believe it…… Thank you so much to my family, to all who support me and also to all who believed in us.
“We prove once again that Argentinians when we fight together and united we are able to achieve what we aim.
“The merit is of this group, which is above individuals, is the strength of all fighting for the same dream that was also the one of all Argentinians… We did it!!! LET’S GO ARGENTINA!!!!”
In an epic final which had to be decided on penalties, Argentina edged out France to win the World Cup.
By scoring in the final, Messi also became the only player in history to have scored in every stage of the tournament, the group stages, round of 16, quarter finals, semi finals, and the final.
