Former WWE star The Rock took to Twitter to confirm Black Adam was not in DC’s plans for the immediate future.
The statement follows actor and producer Dwayne Johnson’s meeting with DC Studios’ new leadership team, James Gunn and Peter Safran.
There has been a lot of speculation about a sequel to Black Adam which many in the industry call Johnson’s ‘pet project.’
Recently, it was confirmed that Henry Cavill will not be returning as Superman.
The hugely popular character was given an end-credits appearance in the Black Adam movie which led to fans calling for a Superman-Black Adam face-off in the sequel but now it seems DC has decided to take a different route.
Similarly, plans for Wonder Woman 3 have also been shelved by DC which is working on its next phase of movies amidst budget cuts as well as a new marketing and branding strategy.
“My passionate friends, I wanted to give you a long-awaited Black Adam update regarding the character’s future in the new DC Universe. James Gunn and I connected, and Black Adam will not be in their first chapter of storytelling. However, DC and Seven Bucks have agreed to continue exploring the most valuable ways Black Adam can be utilized in future DC multiverse chapters,” Johnson wrote.
“James and I have known each other for years and have always rooted for each other to succeed.”
He went on to write, “It’s no different now, and I will always root for DC (and Marvel) to win and WIN BIG. You guys know me, and I have very thick skin – and you can always count on me to be direct with my words. These decisions made by James and DC leadership represent their vision of DCU through their creative lens.”
Johnson added that he was “very proud” to make the film, which released in October and is seen as a loss for DC, despite raking in $400 million, largely due to its high production and marketing costs.
Dwayne Johnson has gone on record many times claiming he believes the movie will eventually make a profit.
