For whom is money motivation NOT effective?

Do you know how effective your employees could be with the right motivation? Recently, the text «The hidden potential of an employee» was introduced to the American market, which has already proven itself in Poland and in Russia. Its author, communication skills coach and NLP master Anastasiia Dashynska says that this project is more relevant than ever for any business.

Anastasiia:

Initially, I was interested in how effective each employee can be in creating the right conditions for themselves. The bottom line is that everyone has their own idea of an ideal workplace, based on personal qualities. This explores the text «Employee’s Hidden Potential». And this test also examines the talents of employees (including hidden ones, their attitude to work and earnings, their level of logic and emotions, the level of their ambitions and aspirations for growth.

What is the peculiarity of this test? Anastasiia:

We all can agree, every boss would like to find a way to organize the work of the company so that each employee tries to perform his duties in the best way and «give his best». But it is obvious that there is no single rule or method of staff motivation. Everyone needs their own approach: it’s one thing if you need to cheer up a newcomer who is not easy to «join» the team, it’s another to find an approach to an employee who, under the guise of responsibility and dedication to the company, hides a desire to hear praise in his address or get an additional vacation.

In this, I see the main purpose of the «Hidden potential of an employee» test – to determine the psycho type, and at the same time – the type of motivation. This information for the manager can be a real discovery in the science of competent staff stimulation.

Although there are also basic principles of motivation, which, perhaps, will cheer up any employee, regardless of the psychotype.

What is special about staff motivation?

Anastasiia:

It would seem that everything is simple: the better a person works, the higher his salary should be

It is often said that people work to earn money. You can’t argue with that, in general. We all live in the material world, everyone has their own needs. But then why is the motivation of staff with money not always effective? Although money is a driving force, it does not contribute to dedication to work.

In the process of conducting the «Hidden potential of an employee» test, I focus on what criteria a person attaches the main importance to when evaluating anything, phenomenon, event. Including work.

In what case does an employee have a sincere desire to use his knowledge, professional skills and experience as fully as possible in his work? When is he ready to work hard, with full dedication?

Anastasiia:

Obviously, this desire arises only if the employee sees a close connection of his personal interests with the work he does in the company.

At the moment, the statistics are as follows: slightly less than half of the respondents are really focused primarily on financial gain. But usually, such workers are not «labour strikers», that is, they could show better results if they knew that they would receive more benefits for this, that is, their remuneration would increase. A thought that can stop him: «Why should I work more if I get exactly the same amount?».

In addition, people for whom material enrichment is the main engine of activity often divide the world into «mine» and «someone else’s». And, accordingly, in working with them, it is important that the company itself, colleagues, and tasks performed fall into the «mine» category, then he will treat them with greater dedication. And it would be wonderful for such a person to understand that he can influence the amount of his salary if he is ready to make more efforts.

What other categories of employees are there?

Anastasiia:

The second category of employees are emotional people for whom feelings and emotions are the highest criteria and argument in decision-making. They need an atmosphere of elation, pleasure from work, it is important for them to feel good in the place where they work. This is what can motivate people with this type of personality and thus cause them to have a loyal attitude to the organization, the desire to remain a member of this organization. But it is quite obvious that the return from employees who are truly committed to their organization increases.

Another category is logicians who are looking for a justification for everything they see, read, hear. Arguments are important to them, and the opinions of professionals are also highly appreciated. What is important to them? Such people should understand the essence of the tasks, that is, why they do this or that work, to what end result it will lead. What is important to pay attention to the peculiarity of people with this type of personality is self-confidence. They attach too much fundamental importance to their own position and opinion, and they have it on any issue. It is important to try to make their opinion coincide with the position of the company. For them, commitment to the company will be equal to faith in corporate values and acceptance of the goals of this organization, as well as confidence in the future.

And what about those who are actively building a career?

The fourth group of people – those who are called careerists in the good sense of the word. They have formed career goals and they know what they are striving for. Such ambitious people require a special approach. It makes no sense to break them and force them, they would rather quit than compromise their beliefs or principles. But it is quite possible to come to an agreement with them, and this is the best solution, because they, most often, are informal leaders, which means they influence others, direct them to achieve their goals, captivate them with their ideas. Do you know how to motivate such employees? For them, the first priority is honour, respect, recognition of merit. And if you take into account their self-esteem, it can give fantastic results.
