How Giving Hope For Them Saves people’s lives—before, during, and after disaster strikes

Every Year in Africa, Hundreds of disasters occur, causing immense suffering, destruction, and loss.

Why does the world care so little about these crises that affect millions of people – crises that will eventually affect everyone? And what are the consequences of the world turning its back on a continent of 1.4 billion people?

Of the world’s 100 million displaced people, 34.3 million are in African countries. Many of these people sit at the bottom of the list when media attention and money for humanitarian aid are distributed. In addition, there is a notable absence of political will among world leaders to do something about the situation.

This year’s list of neglected crises shows that the trend has continued over the past decade. The invisibility of humanitarian crises in Africa forms a pattern. This pattern has to be broken. The lives and futures of millions of people are at stake.

We urge the world’s people that Africa’s voice must be heard. We must all care because we are all human beings sharing the same planet. People in wealthy nations and those in Burkina Faso have much more in common than what separates us. We all want to have good health and education for our children. We all want justice and freedom, and we all fear the death of our loved ones. We all depend on being part of a local and global community.

We are committed to ending poverty, and it requires action from every part of society. And as an NGO, we have a crucial role to play in protecting lives in a crisis. We believe NGOs can significantly impact because they have unique characteristics shaping their team and mission. We hope to bring all of us together for a fantastic project. I believe what we can do together as a society can change the world. 

We protect people around the globe and support them as they build a new future. We started our relief efforts in 2016. Today, we work in both new and protracted crises across 79 countries. We specialize in six areas: food security, education, shelter, legal assistance, camp management, water, sanitation, and hygiene.

We stand up for people forced to flee. GHFT is a determined advocate for displaced people. We promote and defend displaced people’s rights and dignity in local communities, with national governments, and in the international arena. 

We respond quickly to emergencies. Our global provider of expertise boasts around 1,000 experts from all over the world who can be deployed within 72 hours. Our experts help improve international and local ability to prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from crises.

Around 5,000 humanitarians work with the Giving Hope for Them. Most of us are hired locally to work in the field, and a small number are based at our head office in Oslo. Many of our colleagues were once themselves fleeing their homes.

Today, a record 82.4 million people are fleeing war and persecution. Not since World War Two have more people needed our help. The Norwegian Refugee Council assisted almost 10 million people worldwide in 2021, and we can help even more with your support.
