Climate change is already at our front door. The problem is we fear alarming our children or saying the wrong things, but there’s no doubt that they need to know the basic facts. When you’re 8 years old, it’s hard to imagine what climate change is really doing to our planet. The question is how do we talk to our kids about climate change in a way they can relate to? Lucia Matuonto is a children’s book author who decided to help us with that: create two worlds where our young readers could compare what it would be like if we don’tdo our part when helping the environment.
Out of the Box is a book about our environment and planet. More importantly, it’s about two kids: Noah and his sister Mila, who live in Gray Town. This is a town surrounded by walls with no trees, and is full of factories, smog and dirt. The environment is so bad there are barely any trees or wildlife left. They then embark on an adventure to a place they’ve never been before: Green City. Green City is nothing like Gray Town: you can breathe clean air, ride a bicycle and see trees everywhere you go.
Matuonto has allowed for kids to experience these two worlds through the eyes of Noah and Mila, which is important to show how we need to care about our planet. Out of the Box is a story full of adventure and discovery which allows children to connect with a complex issue such as climate change, especially without losing hope.
